Fractions – traditionally hard to teach and harder to learn – but not with TeachTransform’s Grade 2 Master Fractions. Using whole group and small group instruction along with centers, students model, draw, and explain so they understand the meaning of fair shares. They learn to reason and problem solve about equal parts and wholes and justify their thinking with lots of journaling. Perfect for guided math.
Centers, silly characters and contexts keep students interested and develop problem solving grit. They predict and explore with Bits in Bags and explore sharing with the pirate, Springback Jack.
This book includes activities for the whole class, small groups, centers, intervention, and guided math that build the academic language of fractions.
Grade 2 Master Fractions also includes formative assessment that builds from simple questions to more sophisticated thinking so you can see where students’ understanding breaks down and plan targeted support.
Each activity includes:
- Setting Up for Instruction
- How-To Guide with full teacher directions including questions
- Thought Extender Questions to help students get ‘unstuck’ and focus on the math concepts
- Answer Key
- Content explanations to deepen teacher understanding of fraction concepts
- Instruction extras to support implementation of instructional strategies
Tutoring & Intervention
Grade 2 Master Fractions activities can be used for Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 instruction in 2nd grade. The activities can also be used to catch 3rd and 4th graders up and fill in gaps without loss of rigor or time. For example, for 3rd and 4th graders struggling to compare fractions, use I Predict or Smaller or Larger? from Grade 2 Master Fractions to remind them about the sizes of fractional parts.
Instructional Alignment from Grades 2–5
Not only is the content aligned among the grades, but the instructional strategies are too. For students who are “growing up” with TeachTransform’s instructional materials, you can expect them, with a little prompting, to give an answer that includes a why, to use sentences to explain their thinking, to question each other in small groups. This lightens the instructional and cognitive load in each grade and leads to mastery.
